More than 800 motorists were stopped across Hertfordshire during December as part of a Christmas crackdown on drink and drug driving.
The operation, known as Operation Limit, is a national campaign that runs throughout the festive period and targets drivers who get behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
During the month-long operation, officers from the Road Policing Unit stopped a total of 856 motorists. Of those, 382 breath tests and 56 roadside drug wipes were carried out. In total, 69 people were arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through alcohol or drugs.
Chief Inspector Garry Webb from Hertfordshire Constabulary said officers were highly visible throughout the campaign and carried out a range of enforcement activity across the county.
"Our officers were out in force across Beds, Cambs and Herts to ensure people were abiding by the laws of the road and not drinking and/or taking drugs and driving," he said. "As well as proactive patrols and acting on reports and intelligence, officers conducted stop-site operations across the county.
"Unfortunately, some people still continue to break the law, which is unacceptable behaviour. We do thank those who celebrated safely and planned ahead by either booking taxis or nominating a designated driver."
Police have stressed that drink and drug driving enforcement is not limited to the Christmas period and continues throughout the year.
Chief Inspector Webb added: "We want to stress that this is something we look out for all year round – not just during the festive season. Our advice continues to be simple: always avoid alcohol or taking drugs if you are driving. Alcohol impairs judgement and slows reactions, which significantly increases the risk of being involved in a collision."
Residents are encouraged to report suspected drink or drug driving to police at any time to help keep Hertfordshire's roads safe for everyone.
