A motorist died in an incident on the A1 in Hertfordshire this morning, Monday (January 22).

Police were called at 633am to attend after a Renault Megane had overturned on the northbound carriageway of the A1 between Junction 1 for South Mimms and Junction 2 for Welham Green.

Emergency services attended the scene, but the driver - who was the only occupant of the vehicle - was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Herts Police confirmed: "Police were called at 6.33am today to reports of a collision on the A1(M) between Junction 1 for South Mimms and Junction 2 for Welham Green, travelling northbound.

"It was reported that a Renault Megane was on its side.

"Emergency services attended the scene and the carriageway was shut in both directions.

"Sadly, the driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances around the collision."
