North Herts PRIDE has received a major boost ahead of its annual celebration day, after being awarded a four‑figure grant from the National Lottery Community Fund. The funding arrives at a key moment for organisers as they prepare for this year's event, taking place on 22 August from 10am in Hitchin's Market Square.

The grant marks another milestone in the rapid rise of North Herts PRIDE, which began just five years ago as a small picnic on Windmill Hill shortly after Covid restrictions were lifted. What started as a modest gathering of LGBTQ+ residents has grown into one of the district's most vibrant and inclusive community events, drawing families, allies and supporters from across North Hertfordshire.

Organisers say the funding will help cover essential costs for this year's celebration, including the community stage, DJ sets, drag artists and Market Square charges. Importantly, it means that any money raised on the day can be reinvested directly into future outreach projects rather than being used to pay for operational expenses. Volunteers say this financial support allows them to focus fully on creating a welcoming, accessible and joyful event for everyone.

Co‑founder Niamh Skinner said she was "so excited" by the award, describing it as a huge vote of confidence in the work PRIDE continues to do in the community. Fellow co‑founder Katie Wilson added: "It just goes to show what can be achieved from small beginnings."

Organisers say they hope this year's PRIDE Day will be their biggest and most inclusive yet, reflecting the growing strength and visibility of the local LGBTQ+ community.
