Plans for a revamped skate park in Hitchin's King George V Recreation Ground have taken a significant step forward, with designs being consulted on ahead of an estimated 12-week build time once construction begins.

The new facility, set to replace the current skate park, will feature four separate zones designed to accommodate different skill levels, from beginners to advanced skaters.

One of the key highlights is an extended clover bowl, with a shallow end at four feet and deeper pockets reaching between five and six feet. While some debate remains over additional bowl features for advanced skaters, the overall design aims to create a well-balanced space for all users.

Aesthetically, the park will stand out with coloured concrete and patterned walls, adding visual appeal to the space. To help maintain its condition, an anti-graffiti coating could be applied to the walls—though not to the skating surface.

Discussion at the first consultation talked as to whether the council should encourage organised artwork, potentially in collaboration with graffiti artists or local schools.

The structure will come with a 15-year warranty, ensuring long-term durability.

Practical upgrades include a new drainage system to prevent waterlogging, while accessibility has been factored in to make the space inclusive for wheelchair users.

Seating areas for spectators, new trees, and a bin will also be installed to enhance the park's surroundings.

Community safety was a consideration throughout the consultation yesterday. While CCTV could be added if the public supports it, concerns around anti-social behaviour and police involvement are still being discussed.

Lighting is not included in the current budget but may be considered in future funding rounds, similar to projects like Norton Common.

Designers from Canvas have worked closely with local skaters and residents to create a space that meets both practical and aesthetic needs.

With the final design update scheduled for 20th March, residents are encouraged to have their say and help shape the future of this exciting community project.
