New Men’s Mental Health Fanzine in North Herts Seeks Local Support
By Katie Wilson 14th May 2026
In a world full of podcasts, internet sites and constant online noise, a new project in North Hertfordshire is choosing a slower, more human approach. Open Goal is a men's mental health fanzine currently in development, created to offer a gentle space for men to pause, reflect and feel less alone. The project is still at an early stage and is now seeking local sponsors and partner organisations to help bring the first issue to life.
The fanzine draws inspiration from the community spirit found in local football culture — shared stories, humour, nostalgia and the sense of belonging that comes from being part of something familiar. Each planned issue will blend reflective writing, lived experience and simple check‑ins with cultural pieces that spark connection. The aim is to make mental wellbeing feel approachable and rooted in everyday life, rather than clinical or intimidating.
Although still in its early stages, Open Goal has already shaped a clear identity. It is being developed within North Herts by someone with lived experience of the challenges many men face locally, including loneliness, pressure and the difficulty of opening up. The publication intends to offer warmth, honesty and a reminder that conversations about mental health can begin in small, ordinary moments — a memory, a story, a shared experience.
The project hopes to reach men who might not engage with formal support services but who would pick up a small, friendly fanzine in a café, community space or sports club. It is designed for the man who carries everything quietly, the dad waiting at football training, the bloke who hasn't said how he feels in a long time. If the fanzine helps even one reader feel seen, it will have achieved something meaningful.
Open Goal is now looking to connect with local businesses, charities and community groups who may be able to offer sponsorship, partnership or practical support. In a fast‑moving digital world, this small, handmade publication aims to make a big difference — and the next step depends on the support of the community it hopes to serve.I
