New monthly improv comedy night to launch in Hitchin
By Emily Murphy 19th Aug 2026
Fans of Whose Line Is it Anyway? And Dropout TV's Make Some Noise will love the fast-paced comedy, improvised on the spot from audience suggestions. A rotating cast of local players from State of Play will perform on the last Sunday of the month, 5.30 - 6.30pm, creating spontaneous mayhem and magic.
Emily Murphy, Founder of State of Play, says: "We are excited to establish improv as a regular fixture in Hertfordshire's arts scene. There is so much comedic talent locally and this night is about showcasing that and introducing the joy of improv to more people: we want people to see that you don't always have to travel to London to see great improv - it's right here on our doorstep."
State of Play Improv has been running regular classes for adults in Hitchin since the start of 2024, and it has grown and grown, with more classes and shows due to popular demand. According to Emily "improv has seen a surge in popularity nationally - I think people are seeking out community, laughter and connection. We're also in a fantastic location, being close enough to London that we have had some national and international improv superstars come to teach and perform here, while also being the only improv scene around currently, so we have an amazing pool of local performers. Visiting teachers and acts comment on what a brilliant atmosphere there is in Hitchin - I really do think the shows are special, and need to be experienced."
Audience reviews:
"My cheeks hurt from laughing"
"Endless laugh-out-loud moments"
"A really excellent evening's entertainment"
"I was caught off guard by the hilarity many times. If you're looking for a good time, don't miss it"
