"No injuries" after fire in Bearton Road flats

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at 5:40pm yesterday to reports of a fire in a flat in Bearton Road, Hitchin.
Five fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were sent to the scene, where crews found a first floor flat well alight.
Firefighters used multiple hoses and controlled ventilation to tackle the fire, which was all out by 6:30pm.
At 8pm emergency services left the scene but the car park at the back of the flats was still cordoned off today (Wednesday 23rd October)
Police are investigating the fire as it was reported that "a building was set alight".
A fire investigator dog team has visited the scene.
According to Hertfordshire police no injuries were reported and there was a small evacuation.
A 52-year-old man from Hitchin has been arrested in connection to the incident and an investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Mark Barber, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, released a statement thanking: "the fast and dedicated work of our control room staff and firefighters last night we were able to contain and extinguish a fire at a flat in Hitchin. Although neighbouring flats were evacuated to ensure everyone was safe while we tackled the fire, I am pleased that no one was hurt.
"Crews in breathing apparatus inside the building worked together with colleagues on our aerial ladder platform outside the building to contain the blaze, and their prompt work prevented a more serious incident, and ensured that everything was swiftly brought under control.
"We were grateful for the support of our colleagues from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, who provided assistance at the scene."
