North Herts residents are being encouraged to shine a light on the unsung champions who make a real difference in their communities, as nominations open for the 2026 North Herts Heroes awards.

Organised by North Herts Council, the annual awards celebrate volunteers, community champions and inspirational individuals who go above and beyond to help others across the district. From quiet acts of kindness to years of devoted service, the awards aim to recognise the people who embody the very best of North Herts.

Cllr Keith Hoskins, Chair of North Herts Council, said the awards remain a powerful way to honour those who give so much to local life. "The North Herts Heroes awards are a great opportunity for us to formally thank the incredible people who form the backbone of our community. Every year, we are both impressed and humbled by the dedication and sheer community spirit of our nominees. If you know someone who has made a big impact, improved a neighbour's wellbeing, or dedicated years of service to a local cause, the council wants to hear about them."

Nominations are now open across five categories:

  • Caring Award (sponsored by Nyaradzo Funeral Services): For someone who has gone the extra mile to support others day-to-day or through a difficult period.
  • Dedication Award (sponsored by Veolia): Recognising an individual who has devoted significant time and effort to their community over many years.
  • Green Award (sponsored by John O'Conner): Celebrating eco-conscious individuals or groups involved in environmental projects such as litter picks, gardening and recycling.
  • Health Award (sponsored by Altro): For someone who has worked tirelessly to improve health and wellbeing locally.
  • Young Star Award (sponsored by Willmott Dixon): For an inspirational young person (aged 19 or under) who has contributed to their community or overcome challenges to help others.

The deadline for nominations is Sunday 4 January 2026.

A judging panel, including Cllr Hoskins and representatives from award sponsors, will select the winners. Successful nominees will be celebrated at a dedicated awards ceremony in March 2026, receiving a trophy and a gift voucher as a token of thanks.

Residents can submit nominations and read full category criteria via the council's website: North Herts Heroes | North Herts Council.
