Earlier this month NHDC Overview and Scrutiny Committee met to discuss the planned change that is set to be agreed by the Cabinet this evening (14th January)

A report included in tonight's meeting agenda reveals the increase will see 32,000 households in North Hertfordshire hit by a proposed hike in fees for collecting garden waste.

The new garden waste charge would be effective from 1 April 2025.

Council officers recognise the increase may be a "tipping point" that could see up to 2% of users leave the scheme.

The increase comes in the shadow of Hertfordshire Country Council suggestion a 4.99 per cent increase in council tax – of which two per cent is ring-fenced for adult social care – the maximum increase allowed without a referendum.

For a resident in a Band D property it would mean an increase in council tax of around £84 a year – equivalent to £1.62 a week.

Tonight's meeting starts at 7.30pm and can be live streamed here
