The year-long showcase will see visitors given a glimpse of items that are rarely, if ever, on public display, celebrating the rich history, art and heritage of North Hertfordshire.

The initiative coincides with a once-in-a-lifetime collections move, which will see more than one million objects transferred to a new, state-of-the-art storage facility in Letchworth. The move aims to protect and preserve North Herts' collections for generations to come.

The first artefact to be revealed is a striking 4,000-year-old red deer antler pick, introduced by Museum Curator Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews. In a remarkable twist, the prehistoric tool was discovered just 38 metres from the site of the new collections facility.

With its festive connections – both verbal and biological – to its cousin the reindeer, the ancient object was seen as the perfect way to kick off the monthly reveals.

Councillor Tamsin Thomas, Executive Member for Enterprise at North Herts Council, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the depth and breadth of our collection and connect our community with their local heritage in new ways.

As we prepare to move these artefacts to their new home, we want to remind everyone of the incredible stories hidden within our storerooms, many of which have rarely, if ever, been on display but will be in the future."
