North Herts Pride reaches out to cancelled and paused Pride events across the UK
By Katie Wilson 10th Jul 2026
North Herts Pride has begun reaching out to Pride organisers across the UK who have faced cancellations, pauses or closures in recent years, offering messages of solidarity and an open invitation to join the Hitchin‑based event on Saturday 22 August.
Several Pride events have struggled with rising costs, volunteer shortages, weather warnings and funding pressures. Portsmouth Pride was cancelled this year due to severe weather, while Kidderminster Pride announced that increasing costs had made their 2026 event impossible to deliver. Liverpool Pride also faced cancellation last year before returning for 2026.
Closer to home, Bishop's Stortford Pride and East Herts Pride have dissolved, and Luton Pride has closed, leaving many local LGBTQ+ communities without the annual celebration they once relied on.
Co‑founder and organiser Katie Wilson said the outreach is about recognising how fragile Pride events can be, and how important it is for communities to support one another.
"It could have easily been us in the past, and could still be in the future," she said. "In my eyes we are all part of one community, and when I see another Pride cancelled or an LGBTQ+ venue disappear, it's so sad."
North Herts Pride's outreach includes sending support messages, and welcoming affected groups to join the Hitchin event in any way that feels right for them.
"Even when a Pride event pauses or closes, the community doesn't disappear," Katie added. "We want people to know they still have a place to celebrate."
North Herts Pride takes place in Hitchin Market Place, SG5 1DY, with a walking parade at 4pm.
