Nub News Spotlight On: Hitchin Town FC - 'We're fighting for survival'

With the news that the government are set to allow 'some fans' back into football matches at Step 3 and below we take a look into how our Canaries have been faring during the coronavirus crisis.

While the Top Field outfit broadly welcomed the news that loyal supporters will soon be clicking through those evocative turnstiles on Fishponds Road, Hitchin Nub News can reveal that the club are fighting for their very survival.

A club source told us that the much-loved Canaries are facing severe financial struggles caused by the coronavirus crisis.

The pandemic that has rocked us all, has left a big hole to fill in club's finances.

Which is not ideal when they already have a huge job in making sure Top Field doesn't fall down.

While the club are happy with the decision that means non-elite sports are able to admit some spectators with social distancing measures in place - the Canaries say they face a huge task in ensuring their ground meets league standards.

A club source has shared their long-term concerns about the state of Top Field, telling Hitchin Nub News: "A club source told us that the much-loved Canaries have been facing severe financial struggles caused by the coronavirus crisis."

"It feels like the club is at a tipping point.

"The state of our historic stadium is now at a point where is we don't do this essential work, then we won't be playing there next season – it's that simple.

"If we can bring in some money to do these essential jobs, it secures our future at the site and means we can begin to focus competing on the pitch and rising up the pyramid."

"We've got some younger faces volunteering at the club that are helping to steer it towards the future, with the backing of existing committee members and the board, but we've had decades of papering over the cracks to get by season by season that can't go on any longer."
