Plans for a Sainsbury's Local revealed on site of 'tired and dated' Hitchin pub - find out more

Does Hitchin need another Sainsbury's is the question, after a planning application has revealed plans for the construction of a supermarket next to a pub in our town.

A planning application submitted with the council by Greene King would see work done both inside and out at The Anchor Inn pub on Cambridge Road - including plans for a Sainsbury's Local.

According to a planning statement submitted by Walsingham Planning. land at the rear of the building including hedges, grass and a play area, would be turned into shop and warehouse - with the application explaining the site would be "occupied by Sainsburys and functioning as a Sainsbury's Local.

"The store will assist in meeting the day-to-day needs of local residents of the Purwell and Walsworth neighbourhoods," the application also says.

The application also turns its attention to The Anchor,  describing the pub in unflattering terms as "tired and dated and in need of investment".

The proposals aim to reconfigure the garden and demolish of a number of outbuildings, to make way for a garden pergola providing covered outdoor seating, and four timber huts for private and family outdoor dining.
