Police and partners join forces to combat catalytic converter theft in Luton

Bedfordshire Police recently teamed up with STS Tyre Pros and crime prevention specialists SmartWater to provide free security marking for catalytic converters, as part of efforts to reduce catalytic converter thefts in Luton.

On Saturday, July 29, motorists were given the chance to have their vehicle's device marked with SmartWater forensic protection, free of charge, as part of a one-day event at the STS Tyre Pros Luton branch in the Madford Retail Park on Dunstable Road.

Catalytic converters are often targeted by thieves as they contain valuable metals, such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium.

Once the device has been marked, the unique SmartWater formula reference number and vehicle registration number are logged on a national database, making the catalytic converter easily identifiable if stolen and therefore more difficult for criminals to sell on or dispose of.

In order to clearly warn potential thieves that the device is marked and traceable, deterrent labels to display on the car are also provided as part of the service.

Lesley Johnson, Designing Out Crime Officer for Bedfordshire Police, said: "Security marking not only helps owners protect their vehicles and avoid financial losses, but it also serves as a proactive measure to deter thieves and disrupt criminal activity.

"It was great to see so many people taking advantage of this service and taking steps to protect their property, and I'd like to thank STS Tyre Pros and SmartWater for their support in making this event possible.

"This collaboration demonstrates the effectiveness of community partnerships in preventing crime and promoting safety, and we hope to continue organising similar events in the future."

Steps you can take to minimise your chances of becoming a victim of catalytic converter theft include:

Parking your vehicle in a garage or an area that's well-lit and overlooked, and try to position the vehicle so that it is difficult for potential thieves to access the converter

Asking your car dealer for advice on locks or guards that are approved by the vehicle manufacturer and tested to Sold Secure Gold

If you see someone acting suspiciously under or around a vehicle, report it to police on 101 or online at beds.police.uk/ro/report. Call 999 if you see a crime in progress
