Over the past week residents of Hitchin may have noticed that their post boxes were looking especially resplendent with Christmas kitted toppers on top, all part of efforts towards a good cause.

The money raised – via QR codes on the toppers – all goes to Hitchin Choices a charity supporting a youth group in the town.

The six toppers were made by four ladies from the town and the latest fundraising figures showed over £2,000 raised (see their GoFundMe page here)

However, in recent days there have been reports of damage and thefts to the toppers.

One of the team behind the Christmas toppers initiative warned would be thieves that "they are NOT toys! They have chopsticks inside them and hot glue was used. These are definitely not child friendly".

Across Hitchin's social media channels hundreds of residents expressed sympathy and solidarity with the Christmas campaigners
