Hertfordshire County Council is asking residents – including those in Hitchin – to have their say on proposed changes to the county's Recycling Centres.
The public consultation, which runs until 28 November 2025, seeks views on three possible options designed to make the service more financially sustainable and to "help protect staff from abuse".
The proposals being considered include:
- Restricting access to prevent businesses and traders from using the sites.
- Introducing charges for excess DIY waste.
- No longer accepting unsorted residual waste.
The move comes after the new county council administration scrapped earlier plans to reduce opening days and bring in a booking system. The council says it now wants to find "fair and practical" alternatives that reflect residents' needs.
Cllr Paul Zukowskyj, Executive Member for Environment, Transport and Growth, said:
"We know how important Recycling Centres are to Hertfordshire residents, and that's why we want to hear from as many people as possible. This consultation is about exploring three new options to make the service financially sustainable and as effective as possible for our residents. We want to listen to those of you who use recycling centres regularly to help us make the right decision for the future."
All feedback will be reviewed before the County Council's Cabinet makes a final decision in February 2026.
