Truss says she will step down after a week-long emergency contest to find successor

Liz Truss has resigned as prime minister and will step down after a week-long emergency contest to find her successor, she revealed outside Downing Street.

It follows a shambolic 44 days in office during which Truss's polices crashed the financial markets as well as sacking her Chancellor Kwasi Kwarten and losing the Home Secretary - while losing the confidence of almost all her own MPs.

The fourth Chancellor in four months (with a fifth probably coming next week). As the nation is in crisis all we have seen is the ongoing infighting and shambles that is the Conservative party. 

Liz Truss was right to resign, she clearly did not have the ability to run the Country, but it is equally clear that the Conservatives lack that ability too. The Country needs a General Election urgently.

For too long they have taken people in our area for granted, and the public made that clear in the local elections in our area, with the Libs Dems winning many Council seats off the Conservatives in May.

We need to give the public that say on who represents Hitchin in Westminster, and let them have their say on the Conservative government.

It is clear here that when the General Election comes, and it must come soon, that this will be a direct fight between the Liberal Democrats and another Conservative MP complicit in this mess.
