Broadway Cinema in the running for BIFA Independent Cinema of the Year Award!

Broadway Cinema & Theatre in Letchworth has been shortlisted for a brand-new national honour – the BIFA Independent Cinema of the Year Award, supported by Kia – and the much-loved venue is calling on the community to help it win.
The award celebrates cinemas that champion independent film, bring people together, and keep the magic of storytelling alive.
Crucially, it's audience-voted – meaning local support could make all the difference.
For nearly nine decades, Broadway has been at the heart of North Herts, offering far more than film screenings. With its Art Deco charm and carefully chosen programme, the venue has become a hub for creativity, inclusion and connection. From relaxed and subtitled showings to drag performances, interfaith events, local filmmaker showcases, Little Green Cinema, Hong Kong Connect, The Art Society and even Skate Sunday, Broadway has carved out a reputation as a true community space.
Jason Valentine, Venues Manager, said: "Being part of the BIFA nominations has opened new adventures, sparked meaningful dialogue, and reminded us of the incredible kindness of our community. Every visit, every shared moment makes Broadway more than a cinema – it makes it a home."
Broadway is competing for the first ever Cinema of the Year Award, which shines a spotlight on independent theatres that prioritise small-budget gems, new voices, and bold ideas over blockbuster schedules.
Voting is now open and runs until Monday 22 September. The top five cinemas will be revealed on Monday 3 November.
