A major new exhibition celebrating more than six decades of work by Letchworth photographer Rod Shone is set to open at Broadway Gallery.

Rod Shone: Moments Noticed will open on Friday, September 18, offering the first public exploration of the acclaimed photographer's personal archive.

The exhibition brings together images taken from the early 1960s to the present day, documenting the people, places and everyday encounters which have shaped his lifelong fascination with street photography.

Rod has enjoyed an extensive career as a professional photographer, working on international advertising and commercial assignments, editorial projects, album covers and portraits of leading musicians.

Career highlights include photography connected with The Kinks' album Muswell Hillbillies and portraits of Phil Collins, The Communards and UB40.

However, Moments Noticed focuses on the photographs Rod took for himself while travelling, walking familiar streets or between professional commissions.

Many of the images have never previously been exhibited, giving visitors a rare opportunity to see a personal collection created over the course of his lifetime.

The exhibition begins with intimate family portraits and early street photography from the 1960s, produced while Rod was developing his artistic voice.

His early influences included photographers William Klein and Henri Cartier-Bresson, as well as the pioneering work of members of the Magnum Photos agency.

One of the exhibition's highlights is the Miss Italy series, created while Rod was living and working in Italy and during his many subsequent visits.

Featuring streets, bicycles, architecture and scenes of everyday life, the collection reflects his affection for the country and the influence of Italian neorealist cinema on his photography.

Visitors will also see images captured during international assignments and travels, alongside photographs documenting Stoke Newington and London's streets over several decades.

The exhibition concludes closer to home with recent photographs of Letchworth Garden City, where Rod has lived for more than a decade.

Rather than concentrating on the garden city's distinctive architecture, the pictures focus on its people and the small incidents which make up everyday life.

At the heart of Rod's work is a fascination with people and an ability to capture moments of humour, intimacy and humanity in familiar streets and communities.
