Specialist domestic abuse unit marks 10 years of protecting victims in Hertfordshire
By James Denselow 27th Jan 2026
A specialist police team dedicated to protecting people across Hertfordshire from domestic abuse has marked its 10th anniversary.
Hertfordshire Constabulary's Domestic Abuse Investigation and Safeguarding Unit (DAISU), based at Hatfield Police Station, reached the milestone this month.
Launched in 2016, the unit sits within the force's Public Protection Command and is now the largest specialist investigation unit in the constabulary. Alongside carrying out investigations, the team plays a crucial role in safeguarding victims and supporting families affected by domestic abuse.
DAISU is a central part of Hertfordshire Constabulary's response to Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), with women and girls accounting for around 80 per cent of the victims the unit supports. The team also provides support and protection for male victims of domestic abuse.
Over the past decade, the unit has pioneered a range of safeguarding and protection measures, frequently working in partnership with charities and specialist service providers to ensure victims receive the right support at the right time.
The team has also developed evidence-led prosecutions, helping bring offenders to justice in cases where victims may feel unable to support police or court proceedings. Officers regularly use Clare's Law, which allows people to find out whether a partner has a history of violence, and specialise in civil orders such as Domestic Violence Protection Orders and Stalking Prevention Orders.
DAISU officers deal with abuse occurring within current or former intimate relationships, including coercive and controlling behaviour, stalking, financial abuse, sexual abuse and other forms of harm.
Assistant Chief Constable Nick Caveney said: "The DAISU has been a cornerstone of our commitment to tackling Violence Against Women and Girls. It plays a vital role in supporting and protecting people experiencing domestic abuse and bringing perpetrators to justice.
"In 10 years, the unit has grown and adapted to meet new challenges to offer the best possible service to the public. The dedication and professionalism shown by the team over the past decade has no doubt protected a huge number of people and improved the lives of many."
