Stevenage FC have paid tribute to 'gentleman' Glenn Roeder.

The former Watford, West Ham, Newcastle and Norwich manager sadly passed away after a long illness, the League Managers Association announced on Sunday.

After being released by Arsenal as a youngster, Roeder started his playing career at Leyton Orient before appearing for Queens Park Rangers, Newcastle, Watford and Gillingham.

He captained QPR in the 1982 FA Cup final and to the old Second Division title in 1983.

Roeder was also part of the Newcastle team that won promotion from the Second Division in 1984.

Roeder, who was a defender during his playing days, began his managerial career with a spell in charge at Gillingham.

He was also a coach in the England set-up when Glenn Hoddle was manager.

Roeder's last role in the game was as a managerial advisor at Stevenage in 2016.

The League Two club tweeted: "Stevenage FC is deeply saddened to hear the news of Glenn Roeder's passing.

"A footballing giant and gentleman. Our thoughts are with his family."

Nub News would also like to send their condolences to Glenn's friends and family.

"I was sad to hear about the passing of Glenn Roeder", writes Layth Yousif. "Apart from watching him play for QPR and Newcastle as a cultured defender in the 1980s, I had the pleasure of interviewing him a few times during his spell at Stevenage.

"He was a true football man who was always generous with his time with me.

"He loved the game deeply and I enjoyed listening to him speak about his time as a professional footballer including his years at QPR and Newcastle United.

"Football has lost a real gentlemen. RIP"
