Stevenage fraudster jailed for exploiting vulnerable victim

A Stevenage man has been jailed for 22 months after he defrauded a vulnerable man out of more than £10,000.
Casey Porter, 25, of Barleycroft, appeared at St Albans Crown Court on Monday 18 August, where he was sentenced to 22 months in prison.
Porter previously pled guilty to 40 counts of Fraud by abuse of position in July.
This follows a complex investigation led by Hertfordshire Constabulary's Adult at Risk Investigation Team (AARIT).
The court heard that Porter who was working for a care agency had abused his position of trust as the victim's care worker, who is classed as vulnerable and has learning difficulties.
His responsibilities in the role included supporting the victim with grocery shopping and attending to the needs of vulnerable people.
Porter, instead, exploited the victim and on 40 separate occasions between April and September last year (2024), by withdrawing cash from ATMs in Baldock, without the victim's consent and for his own gain. During the investigation, it was discovered that Porter took over £10,000 from the victim's bank account.
Detective Sergeant Helen Wise said: "I am very pleased that Porter will spend the next 22 months in prison.
"His offending was cold, cruel and calculated and I hope that during his sentence he will reflect on the thoughtless crimes that he inflicted on his victim while being in a position of trust.
"My investigating team, including the officer in command of the case Detective Constable Ben Stacey, found that Porter exploited his victim on 40 occasions, and I would like to commend him for gaining justice for our victim.
"The victim has been left utterly devastated by Porter's actions, and it is right that he faces the consequences of his crimes.
"I'd also like to thank the victim and the care home staff for their patience and support during this investigation."
