A Stevenage restaurant has responded to social campaigner and Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford's plea to help give children free meals.

El bar de Tapas in the old town stepped up to offer food to any Stevenage children that rely on a free school meal.

The move came after Tories snubbed Rashford's free school meals bid to feed 1.4million hungry kids.

Rashford was so impressed by the Stevenage tapas bar's offer he retweeted it to his 3.5m followers.

The kind restaurant from Stevenage wrote on their Facebook page: "Having read today that there will be no extra support available for families and their children's lunches over this half term is truly heartbreaking.

"We can do nothing to change that decision, so instead we need to help.

"We work in an industry that is being decimated by this virus, but cannot use that as an excuse not to help.

"We have an amazing fitted kitchen with a really talented team operating it.

"Parents of Stevenage, if your child or children rely on a free school meal then we will provide a cooked meal, drink, fruit and of course some churros.

"It pains us to say it but we do not have the finances to help every child, but will do whatever we can in the current climate."
