Hitchin has suffered storm damage after the Met Office issued an amber weather warning at the start of 2024.

A garage near to Hitchin railway station was damaged when high winds rendered its facade dangerous to the public.

Firefighters were called to attend weakened signage at Kwik Fit on Walsworth Road in a bid to prevent further damage to the building and to passers-by as gusts hit 50-60 miles and hour across the south east.

The road was closed while firefighters attended.

An eyewitness told Hitchin Nub News: "The facade at Kwik Fit had come loose and had to be removed by fire crews."

Nub News understands that debris has fallen in Ickleford with tree branches in the road near the mill bridge.

Nub News has contacted Herts Fire Service for further details. More news as we have it.
