HITCHIN: Organisers fundraising for Ukraine has hailed the generosity and community spirit of people in our town after more than £3,500 has been collected for the beleaguered country.

People in Hitchin and across North Herts have stepped up to help in a raft of heartening ways since Russia invaded Ukraine last month.

Hitchin Nub News has covered plenty of people, groups and organisations who have shown solidarity with the brave people of Ukraine.

The Save The Children Hitchin branch can be added to that impressive list after a recent collection in our town saw a whopping £3,524.17 collected to aid Ukraine.

A team of kind-hearted volunteers stood with buckets outside Waitrose on Bedford Road, with around 30 people taking it in turns to fundraise.

The Hitchin public did not disappoint and emptied their pockets of hear-earned cash to boost the humanitarian cause.

Speaking to Nub News, one of the organisers, Jane Kirk said: "The reaction has been amazing.

"I was blown away by the generosity shown – so many folk wanting to help the people of Ukraine, and especially the children, who had left their homes with almost nothing.

"Thank you Hitchin for your kind hearts."

Jane has also played a part in her local church, All Saints, in Willian raising a further £251.10 this month for Ukraine.

The Save the Children Hitchin branch has previously helped fundraise for humanitarian causes near and far and has a well-earned reputation for kindness and generosity.

Barbara Smith, Save The Children branch treasurer, was delighted with the latest heartwarming response, describing it as: "An amazing amount to have raised over a couple of days - an incredible effort all round from everyone involved."
