The inaugural Hitchin Live at The Priory has been hailed a success after thousands of music fans descended on the town over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Rudimental, The Libertines and Ministry of Sound Classical were among the headline acts to take to the stage in the grounds of the historic Hitchin Priory during the open-air concert series.

The event endured a difficult start when Thursday night's opening headliners, The Human League, was cancelled due to concerns over severe weather.

Organisers said the decision followed advice from the event's on-site medical team, health and safety adviser and other partners, with thunderstorms and heavy rainfall forecast.

But the remaining three days went ahead as planned, beginning with Rudimental and Ella Eyre bringing festival energy to the Priory grounds on Friday.

Saturday saw an all-day indie line-up headlined by The Libertines, with Maxïmo Park, Reverend and The Makers, Mystery Jets and Indoor Foxes also performing.

The weekend then concluded on Sunday with Ministry of Sound Classical, joined by Roger Sanchez, Danny Rampling, Sonique and Seb Fontaine.

Organisers said the event attracted visitors from across Hertfordshire and further afield, bringing additional footfall into Hitchin and benefiting hospitality, accommodation and retail businesses over the Bank Holiday weekend.

A spokesperson for promoters Supermodified said: "While it was incredibly disappointing to lose our opening night, we remain confident that cancelling Thursday's show was the right decision based on the information and expert advice available to us at the time.

"We're hugely grateful to audiences for their understanding and support.

"To then see thousands of people come together across the rest of the weekend and embrace what we set out to create was incredibly rewarding.

"The response from fans, artists, partners and the local community has been overwhelmingly positive.

"We're proud to have launched a new live music event in Hitchin and to have showcased this remarkable venue to audiences from across the region."

The Thursday cancellation followed heavy rain and thunderstorms which caused disruption across Hitchin, including flooding at a number of businesses and the temporary closure of Hitchin Swimming Centre's outdoor pool.

Despite that setback, organisers say the response to the first Hitchin Live at The Priory has been positive and they are now looking ahead to bringing the event back in 2027.
