Young people and their parents are being urged to stay away from abandoned buildings across Hertfordshire following a rise in break-ins at county council-owned sites.

Hertfordshire County Council has issued the warning after reporting an increase in so-called "urban exploring" – where people enter derelict or disused buildings, often to film or photograph them for social media.

The council says while the activity may appear adventurous, abandoned buildings can hide serious dangers including unstable floors, collapsing staircases, exposed electrical wiring, broken glass, asbestos and other hazardous materials.

Executive Member for Resources at Hertfordshire County Council Cllr Chris Lucas said: "We've seen a 352%* increase in the number of break ins in our owned properties, many of which are awaiting remedial works due to structural or hazardous issues. Sadly, despite clear signage and visible warnings, we are still seeing people enter our properties without permission. The signs are there for a reason. If you ignore signage and enter this kind of property you could be in danger of getting seriously injured or exposed to harmful substances."

It is also reminding residents that entering buildings without permission is trespassing and could lead to criminal offences if damage is caused or items are stolen.

The warning comes after similar concerns were raised by Hertfordshire Police earlier this year following incidents involving young people entering abandoned buildings elsewhere in the county. Police said the sites can become dangerous within seconds due to their deteriorating condition.

Parents and carers are being encouraged to speak to children and teenagers about the risks, know where they are spending time during the school holidays, and report unsecured or dangerous buildings to the relevant authorities.

Anyone who witnesses people entering abandoned buildings or believes someone may be at immediate risk is urged to contact police. In an emergency, people should always call 999.
