Windmill Pub nominated as “Asset of Community Value”

The Charlton Society Neighbourhood Forum submitted a nomination to North Herts District Council this month for the Windmill Pub and car park.
The Windmill Pub in Charlton was once a lovely spot for families on a Sunday afternoon walk from Hitchin.
With its large beer garden bordering onto a farm, with a spacious forecourt at the front, the site was a perfect spot for a beer or two in a convivial setting.
However, that all changed 2015 when the site, along with its car park, was sold to a developer.
In 2022 an American woman, Madelaine Moore, saw the pub's potential and decided to reopen its doors but with limited opening hours.
In 2020 an application for The Windmill Pub and Car Park to be registered as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) was successfully renewed for a further 5 years - expiring in 2025.
Campaigners explained that renewing an ACV listing for a pub that has been closed for a lengthy period of time is by no means a straightforward process, and its success rests heavily on being able to demonstrate the public value of the sites.
Continued ACV status put restrictions on what can happen to the site from a redevelopment point of view.
