🎨 Young Volunteer Brings Creativity and Companionship to Residents
By Devina Kutowaroo 26th Mar 2026
There's something truly special about the energy young people bring into a care home, young volunteer Charlotte Lumbis from North Herts College in Stevenage assists the Engagement team at Milford Lodge in Hitchin by taking a series of one‑to‑one and small‑group arts and crafts sessions.
The room fills with chatter, colour, and that unmistakable spark that comes when generations connect. Volunteer Charlotte sits alongside residents, offering gentle encouragement & steady hands as they work together on a range of creative projects.
🌟 What They Get Up To
• One‑to‑one crafting: helping with painting, card‑making, and simple seasonal crafts. These quieter moments give residents the chance to share stories, memories, and a few crafting tips of their own.
• Small‑group activities: Tables buzz with teamwork as groups create collages, decorate keepsakes, and experiment with new materials.
• Building confidence and connection: For many residents, the highlight isn't the finished craft but the companionship. Charlotte listens, smiles and brings a sense of youthful joy that lifts everyone's spirits.
💛 The Impact
These sessions aren't just about making something beautiful—they are about feeling valued, connected, and part of a wider community. Residents commented on how refreshing it is to spend time with young people.
