Carabao Cup: Stevenage 1-1 Watford - Boro win 4-3 on penalties after dramatic shootout

Nathan Thompson scored the winning penalty for Stevenage after a dramatic penalty shootout knocked out Championship side Watford - after it was honours even following 90 gripping minutes in the Hertfordshire derby at the Lamex on a wet Tuesday evening.

Jamie Reid fired over with the hosts' first penalty but Jordan Roberts, Forster-Caskey and Alex MacDonald all converted their kicks before Thompson sealed victory - prompting jubilant scenes at the Lamex in front of 4,495 fans.

Earlier, Hornets No19 Valium Bayo slotted home from close range to put the visitors ahead after only six minutes, as their 1,373 travelling fans celebrated at the other end of Broadhall Way.

However, Steve Evans side are resilient characters and gradually forced their way back into the clash.

With three minutes remains of the first half - plus another six minutes added time at the end of the opening 45 minutes thanks to the infernal new directives - Josh March netted from close range to make the score 1-1.

Boro grew in confidence as the second half wore on, even if Valerien Ismael's side created the finest chance of the evening after a sweeping move upfield that saw Boro's No2 keeper Krisztian Hegyi save well from goalscorer Bayo.

As the clock ticked down Evans brought on Jordan Roberts and Jamie Reid, but neither side could grab a winner, even with the extra nine minutes additional time added by referee Charles Breakspear.

And so it was onto penalties, with boss Evans hailing his side for their bravery after the match, as they won through on penalties to kick-start dreams of hosting a Premier League side in the next round at the Lamex.
