Game Off: League One clash between Stevenage and Barnsley called off.
Stevenage FC said in a statement posted at 115pm that: "This afternoon's game at The Lamex Stadium vs Barnsley has been postponed by the referee due to a frozen pitch."
Stevenage added in a fuller statement shortly afterwards: "The club apologises for the inconvenience caused to both sets of supporters.
"After the initial 11am inspection, the referee was hopeful that by 1pm it would be playable. Despite our best efforts, there remain certain areas of the pitch frozen and dangerous to play on.
"Refunds will be available once the fixture has been rearranged."
It is understood that game was postponed due to a patch of frost along the East Terrace at Broadhall Way. .
The call came after an earlier pitch inspection proved to be inconclusive, leading the match officials to push the final decision back to 1pm.
Barnsley FC added: "We can confirm that today's Sky Bet League One fixture with Stevenage has been postponed following two pitch inspections here at the Lamex Stadium.
"The referee, Neil Purkiss first inspected the playing surface at 11am and then at 1pm, deeming it unplayable ahead of the 3pm kick off."
The extremely late ruling is sure to infuriate travelling Barnsley fans, many of whom set out from South Yorkshire many hours ago.
