Following the unexpected departure to of Steve Evans to Rotherham in April, the managerial rumour mill has been rife with various names.

Here are Stevenage FC fan and writer Owen Rodbard's picks to take on the Boro helm after Evans exit.

My top pick: Alex Revell

Dividing opinion amongst the fans is my pick for the managerial role, Alex Revell. Extensive managerial experience may be lacking, but glimpses in his first stint in charge of Boro, and his time learning under the stewardship of Evans has surely put him in good stead for a second shot at it.

Fans will be dubious after his first spell ended in near disaster, but it's clear to see the progression in the way he speaks and coaches on the sidelines. He said to me back in 2020 that he wants to 'bring exciting, passionate football back', well now is his chance to prove that.

Bookies favourite: Gareth Ainsworth

It's clear to see why Ainsworth is favourite for the job. Worked wonders under a small budget with Wycombe, thrived with the 'plucky underdog' tag which Boro are infamous for, and has a similar direct style of play as Evans, which would translate well to the squad that has been retained.

The issue is the project. Would he be able to build an adoring fanbase and repeat his heroics at a different club? How would his dismal spell at QPR affect his mentality? Would he want a squad overhaul if he joined? All unanswered questions.

Wildcard: Scott Lindsey

Has turned a relegation threatened squad to a smooth flowing, dominant possession based team who will seemingly have one foot in the play off final after last nights 3-0 drubbing of MK Dons.

The WAGMI circus of last season feels like a lifetime away, with Lindsey completely transforming the club with a calm and progressive style of play which has caught the attention of many clubs in higher divisions.

My only qualm would be that the chosen play style of Lindsey is too differing from that of Evans, and may require a lot of transfers in and out, which may not be possible with the newly announced release list.
