Midwinter is a tough time, even more so now that we're in our third national lockdown in ten months.

For those of us looking to lose a few pounds it can be doubly difficult.

By mid January many of us have already broken our new year's resolutions including trying to eat more healthily.

Read on for Hitchin Slimming World consultant Sarah Lawrence's as she shares her weight loss tips with Nub News.

How to make a difference to your New Year's resolution weight loss success

We all love a resolution to set us up for a new year but time and again these fall away over the months, weeks or even days.

Right now we are desperate to make 2021 a better year - but every January many of us set a dieting goal we fail to reach.

After a few days of feeling hungry and miserable, it all goes wrong, maybe leaving us feeling more of a failure and possibly even heavier than when we started.

Sound familiar?

Here are some tips to make this one different.

1. Turn a resolution into a plan

New Year's Resolutions are just the starting point. The idea that leads to change if we action it. Joining a club or a gym isn't so easy right now but support is out there. Many are running virtually and it is possible to find the motivation there to keep going past the initial dream.

2. Make a commitment

Whatever your plan is, say it out loud, to someone who cares and will ask you how you got on.

Support from friends, family, a community of likeminded people is vital. Maybe even buddy up with someone.

3. Keep it positive

When we stumble it is very easy to be hard on ourselves in a way we never would to anyone else.

The person hearing the harsh words we use is ourselves and that has a huge impact on how we continue to feel and continue to act.

4. Prioritise YOU

In your diary, on your calendar, in an app. Wherever that is for you block out the time that you need to action all your plans.

5.Celebrate your successes

We often feel shy in shouting about what we do well but this is a fabulous motivator.

I never expected to find these things in a Slimming World group.

I expected to be told what to eat and then to be hungry.

This shock, that things could be different really led to my confidence growing, week after week – confidence in my ability to actually do it this time.

I was terrified on my first day. Terrified to meet new people, to feel more of a failure, to let myself down, to even speak to new people.

I was at rock bottom, depressed and desperate. I was avoiding social situations, my clothes all looked awful, my joints hurt….

And I'd resigned myself to that forever. Defeated.

What I found in the group was that what to eat wasn't the biggest thing I needed to learn. That was covered very quickly.

What was then needed was all the layers, week after week. Slimming World have over 50 years in experience in the psychology of slimming.

This is what they do. This is now what I do too.

It changed my world and I'd love it to change yours too.
