Is it New Year – New Career? Or is it January Schmanuary?

January starts out filled with optimism and resolutions. New gyms, less booze, and a promise to do things a bit differently, hopefully to make things that bit better, writes Jeremy Colman.

Then the real January kicks in.

The cold weather, the dark mornings, afternoons, and for many, the dreaded commute starts to, once again, take its toll.

The disruption to the trains or the M25, the hours and hours and hours of wasted time, and of course, the never to be forgotten… eye-watering cost combines to create a bit of a deflated huff.

A positive side-effect of this huff though, is that it brings with it a more committed and longer lasting second wind. This second 'New Year, New Career' opportunity for local businesses, and local talent alike is much more productive than the first one.

Once the January hubbub has quietened down, it's time to start making plans for the real 2024, and to start genuinely building the steppingstones for change. Those who engage in this second wind are often more committed to making the change than their 'New Year' tyre-kicking counterparts.

Commuters and Candidates:

You may not be actively looking right now, but just imagine for a moment… Doing the school run, and still being at work on time. Popping out at lunchtime, or God-forbid…home for a quick bite… Being the last to leave the office, and still being home for bath-time… Not to mention the joy of not standing on a freezing platform, only to be told that the next train is cancelled, or those beautiful overhead lights on the M25 flicking from 60 to 40 and you remaining motionless, watching the planes take off or land… (guess my working history).

Working from home is great for some of the time, but the trend of presentee-ism in the office is coming back, so wouldn't it be great to spend less time and money commuting, and more time 'being'?

The North-Herts area is a hub for some incredible businesses, and the attraction of working more locally, while still being able to be stretched professionally is a trend that's on the up.

Why not give it some thought?
