Gareth Southgate: A Legacy We’ll Only Understand Later?

Readers Letters by Katie Wilson 5th Jun 2026

As we stand on the verge of another World Cup, is it possible that Gareth Southgate's legacy as England manager will only be truly understood in the years ahead? When we look at his record — two major finals, a World Cup semi‑final, and more knockout wins than all other England managers combined since 1966 — do we fully appreciate what that actually represents? Or are we too close to the moment to see the scale of what he achieved, and are we about to find out in the next decade, be careful what you wish for !

Is Southgate's impact really about results alone, or is the deeper story the cultural transformation he led? When he took over a national team weighed down by cynicism, failure, and a fractured relationship with its own supporters, who genuinely believed he could rebuild that broken bond? And yet, didn't he create an environment where players felt safe, supported, and able to express themselves without fear of ridicule or past trauma?

Could it be that his greatest strength was psychological rather than tactical? By absorbing pressure, shielding his squad from media storms, and leading with calm emotional intelligence, did he not create a culture of trust and belonging that England had lacked for decades? And isn't psychological safety — the freedom to make mistakes without humiliation — exactly what allowed England to perform with composure in moments where previous generations had collapsed?

What about the fans? Wasn't it Southgate who helped turn apathy into pride, hostility into hope, and detachment into connection? If legacy is measured not just in trophies but in the emotional landscape a leader reshapes, doesn't he deserve credit for making the England team feel like our team again?

So when we look back will we say "wow, he did more than ok?" Will history remember him not just for the finals he reached, but for the culture he rebuilt, the belief he restored, and the psychological scars he helped heal? And in the end, isn't that the kind of legacy that lasts longer than any single result?
