The Blackberry That Slipped Away

Readers Letters by Katie Wilson 12th Aug 2026

I spent a recent morning picking blackberries along one of our local footpaths. It was only half an hour, nothing dramatic — just the quiet of the hedgerows and a handful of berries gathered without too many scratches.

As I reached for one perfect blackberry, it slipped straight through my fingers and disappeared into the brambles. I still had plenty in my hand, but I noticed the loss of that one more than the rest I'd managed to collect.

Later on, it reminded me of an old story many people know — the shepherd who realises one sheep has wandered off, even though ninety‑nine are still safe. Whether someone sees it as a faith story, a childhood memory, or simply a picture of human nature, the meaning is the same: sometimes the smallest thing that slips away is the thing we notice most.

That blackberry moment made me think about how often life works like that. We can have plenty going well, plenty to be grateful for, yet our attention catches on the one thing that falls through the brambles — a missed chance, a forgotten moment, someone we haven't seen in a while.

It was only half an hour of blackberry picking, but it left me with a gentle reminder: noticing what slips away is part of caring, and part of being human.
