Stevenage lost 5-3 on penalties to Wycombe Wanderers after a 2-2 draw in normal time.
The visitors Tjay de Barr slotted home the winning spot kick to dash Boro hopes in a Carabao Cup heartbreak.
De Barr inflicted a double blow on the home side after denying Boro victory in normal time with a last-gasp equaliser in time added on, with Luke Prosser floundering as the cross came in from Daryl Horgan.
Earlier, Stevenage came from behind to lead Wycombe 2-1 with seconds remaining prior to de Barr's late intervention, during their failed but brave bid to reach the third round of the League Cup for the first time in their history.[.B]
Prior to the late leveller, Jamie Reid notched a 76th minute goal to send Boro fans into raptures at the Lamex on Tuesday evening.
The lively Elliot List made it three goals in five games to equalise for Alex Revell's side to make the score 1-1 five minutes after the interval following good work from Prosser and Jake Reeves.
Gareth Ainsworth's visitors went 1-0 ahead in the first half after the giant Adebayo Akinfenwa notched his first goal of the season in the 23rd minute.
