It was a feature of the first lockdown back in the spring of 2020 - and now it's returning.

The Thursday clap for NHS and key workers is back tonight, renamed clap for heroes.

On the strike of 8pm on Thursdays during the first lockdown, people paid tribute to those working hard in the NHS as well as carers everywhere.

Many people in Hitchin joined in, taking time to leave the comfort of their homes to acknowledge the efforts of frontline staff leading the fight against Covid.

In a heartening weekly display of solidarity many clapped to show their appreciation, while others took to making a racket with pots and pans and anything that would make a noise, in a show of appreciation for health workers.

Now the weekly clap is returning - but everyone who plays a part in getting us through the pandemic is being applauded this time around.

"We are bringing back the 8pm applause - in our third lockdown I hope it can lift the spirit, of all of us," said the original Clap for Carers creator Annemarie Plas.

"Carers teacher, homeschooling parents, those who shield and all who is pushing through this difficult time!"

The first Clap for Heroes takes place tonight (Thursday, January 7) at 8pm.

Hitchin Nub News will be out and about filming Facebook Live of people taking part, but why not post your best pics on our page and/or tweet us @HitchinNubNews.
