A chapter in Hitchin's nightlife history is coming to a close after the family behind Club 85 announced they are stepping away from the business after more than four decades.
Jas and Ranjit Lidder have confirmed that this Sunday will be their final day running the venue, bringing to an end 41 years of family involvement at the iconic Hitchin club.
In a message shared with customers, the brothers said they had made the decision to retire and step away from the business, thanking generations of customers for their support since their father, Tarsem Singh Lidder, first took over Club 85 in 1985.
The statement described their time at the venue as "an incredible journey, filled with laughter, friendship and many unforgettable memories".
The Lidders said: "Over the years, we have had the privilege of meeting so many wonderful people and being part of such a special community."
Club 85 has long been one of Hitchin's best-known entertainment venues, hosting live music, club nights, community events and celebrations while becoming a fixture of the town's social scene.
The family has confirmed the business will be leased to Bob Mardon, who already has a long-standing connection with the venue.
Mr Mardon has been the promoter for the Club 85 music venue for the past 25 years and the Lidders said they were confident the club would remain in good hands.
"We know Club 85 will be in safe hands and we wish Bob every success as he takes the business forward," they said.
The announcement has prompted an outpouring of goodwill from customers, musicians and local residents on social media, with many sharing memories of nights out, live performances and celebrations at the venue over the years.
The Lidders have invited customers to visit the club one final time before they hand over the reins.
"This Sunday will be the final day that the Lidder family runs Club 85," they said. "Please do pop in for one last drink under our tenure, so we can personally thank you for all the support you have given us over the years."
For many Hitchin residents, the departure of the Lidder family marks the end of an era for one of the town's most recognisable venues, while the handover offers a new chapter for Club 85 under familiar stewardship.
