More than 235 runners took on some of the toughest climbs in the Hitchin countryside on Sunday as the Hitchin Hard Half Marathon returned with a refreshed route and a new town centre start and finish.

The popular event, renowned for combining stunning Hertfordshire scenery with challenging elevation, saw participants take part in either the half marathon or the ten-mile race, with organisers reporting smiles from start to finish despite the demanding course.

For 2026, the event introduced a revised format, bringing both the start and finish into Hitchin town centre and making adjustments to parts of the southern section of the route.

Organisers praised the efforts of the volunteers and marshals who helped make the day a success.

A spokesperson said: "Over 235 people took part in a revised edition of the event, with a town centre start and finish and tweaks to part of the southern section of the route.

"The runners took on some of the most beautiful, and brutal, climbs in the south Hitchin area. This year had the half marathon and the ten miler, with runners in equal measure having big smiles on their faces throughout the race from start to finish.

"All those that came out to marshal and volunteer at the event were superb too, as it is them who maketh the event."

Organisers have also revealed that the Hitchin Hard Half Marathon will take a break in 2027 to make way for the return of another popular local endurance event.

After a five-year absence, the Great Hertfordshire AONB Event is set to return next year, offering both running and cycling options across the county's countryside.

The event will feature 10km, half marathon and full marathon distances, with organisers saying between 90 and 95 per cent of each route will be off-road, allowing participants to experience the area's landscapes and trails.

For the first time, cyclists will also be able to take part alongside runners.

The event headquarters will be based in the village of Gosmore, just south of Hitchin, and there will also be children's races taking place throughout the day.

Early bird entries are already available, with discounted rates for affiliated England Athletics runners and additional savings for members of clubs competing in the Midweek League.

Despite the official launch still to come, organisers say entries are already being received.

The spokesperson added: "We are already seeing people sign up before the official launch, which is fantastic to see."

The Hitchin Hard Half Marathon is expected to return in 2028 with a new headquarters location and an updated route.
