Work started this week on the refurbishment of the Anchor pub in Hitchin.

On Monday builders were seen on the site installing portacabin infrastructure.

Plans were approved back in March to allow for work on the pub but more controversially to construct a Sainsbury's Local on vacant land to its rear.

In September Greene King announced via its website that the pub "will undergo an extensive refurbishment and become the jewel of the crown at this great location".

"We are planning an investment that will transform the pub, creating the best pub garden in the area, which will see an extensive covered pergola created, complete with light, heating and TVs that will allow all year-round trading opportunities."

Earlier this month Conlon Construction, the appointed contractor for the work, wrote a letter to nearby residents asking for their "patience and understanding" during the building.

They shared the details of the proposed window of the works which are estimated to be completed by the 9th of May 2025.

If residents have concerns about the work they are advised to email [email protected]
