As the world watches on with horror at the terrible unfolding situation in the Ukraine, a Hitchin boxer has spoken out against the war, while hailing the bravery of two very special former pugilists from the Eastern European country.
While Russia's invasion of its neighbour has shocked the planet, the redoubtable spirit, heroism and fortitude of the Ukrainian people has impressed everyone who believes in democracy, not least the courageous actions of two teak-tough former prizefighters from the region.
In their sporting prime, Vitali Klitschko and his brother Wladimir created a boxing dynasty as heavyweight world champions.
They are now leading the way through their fearless battle against the might of the Russian war machine, in a deadly fight that they simply refuse to yield.
The brave actions of Vitali - who is Mayor of Kyiv - and brother Wladimir have earned the respect of everyone watching from afar, not least highly-rated Hitchin boxer Tom Ansell.
Speaking to Hitchin Nub News, humble Tom said: "The courage, unselfishness and incredibly strong mentality that the Klitschko brothers have shown is absolutely commendable.
"To step into war, when people of their wealth and status could have easily fled to or stayed at home, is exemplary.
"Not only have they achieved legendary status in sport, they are standing firm during the fight of their lives, when their country needs them most. They heroic role models worthy of such utter respect."
Tough Tom took time out of his busy schedule to share his anti-war feelings after Russia's despotic leader Vladimir Putin took his country into a conflict that no-one wanted.
Tom, who will be fighting at spiritual home of English boxing at the York Hall in Bethnal Green next weekend, showed he has a social conscience to go with his undoubted boxing talent.
The 29-year-old underlined his solidarity with the Ukraine people after the tragic invasion by the totalitarian demagogue Putin.
"Its hard to believe that we are living a time when this can happen," explained Tom, adding: "Especially after what the world has gone through in the last couple of years during the Covid pandemic.
"It's been humbling yet inspiring to see how high the morale in Ukraine has been in the face of such odds.
"I wish everyone in Ukraine continued strength and hope they can stay safe: No War In Ukraine."
With such powerful statements allied with his boxing talent, it's no surprise Tom is such an admirable and popular sportsperson.
No wonder Tom is expecting to take more than 300 supporters - called the Ansell Army - to roar him on at the York Hall on Saturday night in an English title eliminator.
The 29-year-old will headline the bill for the first time at renowned East London venue when he takes on Derby's Sajid Abid - with a triumph putting him in the frame a title shot for the belt held by Billy Allington.
Looking towards next weekend, modest Tom added: "I would like thank you everyone much for their support.
"I can't wait to perform in front of the Ansell Army again."
Hitchin Nub News will be at York Hall to cover Tom's eagerly-awaited bout next Saturday.
