Bim Afolami MP has joined Hitchin police officers to raise awareness of road safety issues in our town.

Hitchin's MP visited Grove Road on Thursday to discuss the problems raised by people regarding road safety issues caused by the sheer volume of HGV traffic on this particular road.

Hitchin Nub News readers have raised issues about the aggressive driving from the procession of HGVs, many of which are full to the brim with scrap metal.

Speaking to Nub News Mr Afolami said: "Improving local road safety is one of Bim's local priorities - and the issue of dangerous HGV movements in Hitchin's residential roads is an area where action is clearly needed.

"I have previously raised this with the Secretary of State for Transport and, with tackling bad driving being a priority for Hitchin Police, we are exploring all possible avenues to protect Hitchin residents."

Mr Afolami added: "Residents have a right to feel safe on our residential roads in Hitchin. Grove Road is a site where residents have expressed to me that there is a particular problem with the speed, volume and size of HGV traffic.

"I would like to thank Hitchin Police for taking the time to visit the road with me today to discuss ways in which we can improve safety."

Mr Afolami also explained that, in the short term, he believes it is very difficult to get rid of all HGVs from Grove Road - but what the police can do is look at other measures, including parking, speed restrictions, restrictions on times of day, and others.

Hitchin's Parliamentarian will also be looking to hear more from local residents in the coming weeks about how the town can best tackle this significant local concern - while also taking up the outcomes of those discussions with councils to demand action.

[I]"In the longer term," Mr Afolam added: "we will need to think more about Hitchin's road infrastructure and ways in which we might be able to direct HGV traffic away from densely populated residential areas in our town.

"I will explore every option available to find a solution."
