Boots is set to close 300 of its stores up and down the country over the 12 months.

The decision will cut the number of its shops from 2,200 to 1,900.

While Boots hasn't confirmed the exact locations, those which are set to shut are said to be shops which are close to another site.

Hitchin's Boots store on the High Street near to Market Place is the only shop in our town, while Letchworth has a store in the Garden Square Shopping Centre.

However, nearby Stevenage hosts stores in Queensway, London Road and Roaring Meg, any of which could be threatened as per the company's stated policy.

In its quarterly results the hight street store said: "Over the next year Boots will continue to consolidate a number of stores in close proximity to each other.

"Evolving the store estate in this way allows Boots to concentrate its team members where they are needed and focus investment more acutely in individual stores with the ambition of consistently delivering an excellent and reliable service in a fresh and up to date environment."

Boots insists these closures will not lead to any redundancies among its 52,000 staff across the country.
