Demolition of the car park at Luton Airport that was partially destroyed by a large blaze has begun.

A substantial fire started at Terminal Car Park last October that was to write-off nearly 1,500 vehicles.

Luton Airport have confirmed work has begun to knock down the damaged structure. The work is expected to take four months.

As Nub News reported in the aftermath of the inferno, drivers were concerned about insurance companies paying up.

However, the airport has insisted the vast majority of insurance claims have now been settled, underlined by the fact Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was unlikely any of the cars inside the car park would be salvageable.

After the cars have been removed, they will be taken by salvage companies appointed by insurers.

Beds Police officers believe the blaze began when a diesel car suffered an electrical fault or leaking fuel line.

They arrested a man in his 30s 'as a precaution' a few days after the fire, but he was later released on bail pending further inquiries.
