Enfield 1-3 Hitchin Town
By Roy Izzard 9th Mar 2026
Three excellent finishes guided Hitchin to a comfortable victory over Enfield to keep the pressure on Leighton. Manager Michael Jones was really pleased with the result but he did not think we were at our best. However winning was all that mattered on a thoroughly miserable evening with relentless rainfall. The artificial surface was immaculate and seemed to help Hitchin's passing game.
Not surprisingly after the 5-0 drubbing of Beaconsfield there was an unchanged line up and Hitchin started on the front foot, Lewis Franklin shot weakly after just 2 minutes before Hitchin took the lead 4 minutes later. From an excellent Franklin cross Liam Brooks provided the perfect glancing header to steer the ball over goalkeeper George Edgeworth. However the lead did not last long as a wickedly inswinging corner was headed in by George Sykes after 17 minutes.
Hitchin continued to dominate possession and after good work from Will McNeill Callum Kane had a shot saved. Hitchin regained the lead on 23 minutes and it was a cracking finish from Callum Nicolson giving the keeper no chance with a fiercely struck shot. Hitchin went looking for more goals and Charlie Briggs shot over the bar and Nicolson had a shot blocked after a clever short corner routine. The third goal was coming and it arrived after 39 minutes and Franklin provided the pass for Brooks to unleash a brilliant finish. So going in to half-time Hitchin had breathing space.
Hitchin were not quite as sharp in the second half and did not add any more goals to their tally but they remained the dominant team and managed the game very well with Tyler McGregor rarely called in to action. Franklin had a shot saved at the expense of a corner after 48 minutes while Brooks thought he had completed a well deserved hat-trick after a very good move involving Franklin but he was flagged offside.
Josh Coldicott-Stevens forced Edgeworth to tip a well struck shot over the bar after 58 minutes. Diogo Freitas-Gouveia replaced Taylor Rhiney and had a shot well saved after 69 minutes but that fourth goal would not come. All the substitutes got a run out as Hitchin remained in control and never looked like giving up a deserved victory.
So it was a well merited three points and while not at their peak Hitchin played plenty of good football and delighted the large away following that doubled Enfield's average attendance. The strength of the bench was again shown and the manager has the best kind of selection dilemmas with the competition for places. There can be no let up and Hitchin have to be relentless and consistent as they chase down Leighton.
