Sir Gareth Southgate visits Hitchin while filming new BBC documentary on young men
By James Denselow 8th Mar 2026
Former England manager Gareth Southgate was spotted in Hitchin this week as part of filming for a new BBC documentary exploring the experiences of boys and young men across England.
The programme, titled We Need To Talk, sees the former England football boss travel around the country speaking to young people, youth workers and mentors about the challenges facing the next generation of men.
Filming in Hitchin formed part of the documentary's wider exploration of how communities help shape young men's lives and futures.
The film, which will be broadcast by the BBC, aims to present candid accounts from boys and young men about the realities they face at home, in school and in the workplace. Through these conversations, Southgate examines the importance of male role models and the impact mentors and community organisations can have on young people's development.
In the documentary, Southgate is driven by what producers describe as a "deep commitment to helping every young man fulfil his potential". The programme focuses on the role that communities, families and wider society play in supporting young men as they navigate modern life.
Southgate, who led England national football team to the finals of UEFA Euro 2020 and UEFA Euro 2024, has increasingly spoken publicly about the pressures young men face and the need for positive role models.
His visit to Hitchin is expected to feature as part of the documentary's broader look at communities across England working to support boys and young men.
