Feeling drained: Hitchin's River Hiz has its annual clean - but where have the swans gone

Visitors to Hitchin Town centre may have noticed something is missing.

If you've been around St Mary's Church and the riverside, you would have seen the River Hiz looking somewhat drained.

The normally vibrant river scene in front of our town's iconic 12th century church has been lacking this week.

That's because the river that flows through our town centre has Beene having its annual clean, between St Mary's and Peppermint Court in Whinbush Road.

These sections of the river operate via a 'balancing tank' system which, with the use of sluice gates which help retain river water in those sections, intended to create a visually appealing, deeper river in the centre of town.

The silt and sludge in the tanks, if not removed, can obstruct the flow in the tanks. General rubbish has also be removed from these sections of the river.

The water has been drained and be refilled from today, Friday, January 28, following completion of the works.

We're looking forward to the River Hiz returning in all its glory - but one more thing: Does anyone know where the swans have gone this week?

If you've come across swans that normally reside on the River Hiz outside St Mary's we'd love to see your pictures.
