Football fans have been left in the dark after a power outage at Stevenage FC tonight, Friday (December 29).

Thousands of loyal supporters had gathered in anticipation at The Lamex Stadium to watch Stevenage FC play Cambridge United , with the game set for an official kick-off at 745pm.

However, shortly after 720pm the stadium's floodlights- as well as lights inside the ground including terraces, stands, and corporate and executive boxes - suffered a loss of power, literally leaving fans in the dark, while the Lamex tea bars also went dark.

As the lights went off, many more fans - estimated to be more than 2,000 in number - were still queuing to get into the ground to cheer on high-flying Boro.

At 734pm, the club's PA, Jay Drackford kept the perfectly behaved crowd informed by saying 'an engineer was working on it' while suggesting that the work could be done within '15 minutes'.

The 15 minutes came and went but the lights failed to come back on. At 7.59pm the stadium fell into complete darkness as emergency lighting also went out - prior to lighting gradually being restored.

The club's announcer Mr Drackford apologised for the lack of information explaining that the power went on his communication equipment and so was unable to share updates with the patiently behaved crowd.

Mr Drackford added that the club "are in contact with the EFL."

There is still no official confirmation that the game will take place.
