Friday evening's League One clash between Stevenage FC and Cambridge United has been called off after a power cut.

As Nub News reported at the scene, the majority of lights went off at the Lamex Stadium around 720pm - ahead of the scheduled 745pm kick-off - leaving thousands of fans in the dark at Broadhall Way.

The blackout included the East Terrace, North Stand, West Stand and away end housing visiting supporters, as well as corporate and executive boxes and Lamex tea bars.

The eagerly-anticipated clash between high-flying Boro and the U's had been set to post the club's biggest attendance of the season at around 6,500 supporters.

However, after engineers failed to restore power and lighting in good time the game was eventually called off just after 815pm, as well-behaved supporters left the ground safely.

Stevenage FC issued the following statement: "Tonight's fixture vs Cambridge United at The Lamex Stadium has been cancelled due to a local area power cut.

"This has been confirmed by UK Power Networks who have made the following statement: 'We are receiving reports from other customers about a power cut in your area.

"'We are investigating reports of a power cut and more information will appear here shortly, so keep checking for updates. We are sorry for any disruption this may be causing you.'"

Stevenage added that tickets purchased for the fixture will remain valid for the rearranged fixture. Refunds will also be made possible with details announced in due course.

Stevenage boss Steve Evans was quick to praise the emergency services and relevant authorities in safely evacuating thousands of fans after the match was called off. The Boro manager also praised both sets of fans for their patience and excellent behaviour.

Stevenage travel to League One leaders Portsmouth on New Years Day, with Mr Evans adding with a rye smile: "It will be a tough game but hopefully we won't have to rely on the light for a result..."
